As a result of gathering material for some services on the theme of the environment (creation and our responsibility to care for it) we came across a website called the eco congregation. It is a really good initiative that encourages churches to do what they can to think and act in an environmentally friendly way. Inspired by the material the Church Council supported the idea that Marton Methodist Church would work toward getting an “Eco Congregation” award. To get the award we needed to design and deliver an action plan which would include activities/actions which fit into the three main areas of church life:
'spiritual': worship and teaching
practical: things to do with buildings, land and church management
mission: reaching out, both locally and globally
We worked through the checklist to help us to recognise what we already did and spot things that we could start to do (or do better). This helped us develop the action plan which we then delivered through our various groups and committees, and were pleased to be given the Eco Congregation Award at the beginning of 2010.
That is by no means the end of the journey as we need to continue to ensure that we build on where we currently are to enable us to remain an eco-congregation, and this is always one of the agenda items when our committees meet. The award lasts for 3 years and then we will be re-assessed, so please keep your eyes and ears out for various activities and support them as much as you can to help us to keep focussed and remain an eco-congregation.
