Celebrating Easter and the Holy Week

Easter is the most important festival in the Methodist (and Christian) calendar. It celebrates Jesus rising from the dead, three days after he was crucified.

The date of Easter Sunday varies from year to year. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon, on or after 21 March, please see our notices for the dates for all of the services in Holy Week (some may be held in our neighbouring churches).

Easter is part of Holy Week which consists of:

  • Palm Sunday: The Sunday before Easter Sunday. It commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, when palm branches were placed in his path
  • Maundy Thursday: The Thursday before Easter Day. It commemorates the Last Supper Jesus shared with the apostles, the origin of our Holy Communion.
  • Good Friday: The Friday before Easter Sunday. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus.
  • Easter Sunday: Easter Sunday celebrates Jesus’s resurrection.

You can find more information about Easter and Lent on the official Methodist website.
